a fans look from behind the dugout

A look at the Wichita Wranglers

By john • Feb 16th, 2007 • Category: minor leagues, wichita wranglers

I’m going to take a quick look at the roster of the 2006 Wichita Wranglers. To avoid posting everyone on the roster (some guys who will likely be back with the team next season) I’m only going to include hitters with 200 or more atbats and pitchers who pitched more then 35 innings uncless I have something noteworthy to say about them.

Mitch Maier - fourth outfielder at best
Angel Sanchez - despite good batting averages lately seems unlikely to develop anywhere else
Alex Gordon - First round pick in 2005. Looks to surplant Mark Teahan at third. All-Star caliber player here
Christ Lubanski - a first round pick in 2003, seems destined to make the majors. probably a #2 or #5-6 hitter with the Royals talent.
Billy Butler - First round pick in 2004. Defense is a question mark. Hopefully Mike Sweeney minus the injuries.
Dee Brown - 28 year finally got hot towards the end. If he makes it back probably won’t be as more then a injury replacement.
Donnie Murphy - A dissapointment. He’s now in the A’s system. A fifth round pick who could still be a useful backup middle infielder.
Kila Kaaihue - The crappy brother. Little chance of making the majors. Poor average, not enough power, only plays 1B.
Adam Keim - Another roster filler. Nothing worth noting.
Matt Tupman - Will look to steal playing time from John Buck by the all-star break. Could be an adequte major leaguer.
Adam Donachie - 2nd rounder in 2002 now with the Orioles. Despite limited playing time he could be a useful backup in the majors.

Junior Herndon - At 27 was a little old for AA. Seems unlikely to make it back to the show.
Seung Song - At 26 seems unlikely to make it. 5-10 5.37 ERA with a 1.59 WHIP could be a large reason. Wasn’t as bad seasons before.
Zack Greinke - Obviously going back to the majors. Rumors or making him a closer rumbled but he’s just 22 and throwing away a guy who could be an ace for years would be dumb.
Juan Cedeno - Despite a couple of nice starts seems unlikely to be consistent enough to be reliable.
Kyle Middleton - 2006 was his 3rd year in the Texas League. Could make a few starts in the majors, could be a reliever for a few seasons.
Cody Smith - Originally a starter in the Rangers organization. Appears to be a pretty good reliever in the making.
Neal Musser - May not get a chance but has been a pretty good starter in the minors. 26 years old.
Billy Buckner - Made his way up from A-ball. Could make it to the majors as a end of the rotation starter.
Thad Markay - A huge guy from Lousiana. Rebounded from a subpar 2005 season. Looks like he could be a good late inning solution.
Nate Hoelscher - After his second season in the Texas League was no better this his first this undrafted story is likely running out of time.
Ryan Braun - Looks to have a good chance at making the club out of spring training. The 26 year old may even be in line for saves.
Tyler Lumsden - First round pick of the White Sox in 2004. Acquired for Mike McDougal. Lumdsen pitched well with a 2.69 ERA in the Southern League and a 3.06 ERA in the Texas League. I may be overratting him but, a #2 pitcher in my mind; maybe even better if he improves his control.
Ryan Snare - He got to play one game in the majors. More then me but I can’t seeing it happening again.
Derrick Depriest - Made it back after spending parts of the last 4 years in the Indepent leagues. At 29 he probably just shot himself in the foot with a 7.01 ERA and 1.79 WHIP in AA.
