The switch pitcher & Slammin’ Sammy

By john • Apr 8th, 2007 • Category: opinions, sammy sosa

The New York Times had an article about the most recent college kid to throw with both arms. A few years ago the idea of a pitcher who could throw with both arms was intriguing but now it just seems like a publicity stunt.

Pat Venditte has a 3.29 ERA in 18 appearances, though this is Division 1 A and the article can’t even confirm if he’s the only ambidextrous pitcher in Division 1.

Sure the guy may be able to get a few across the plate, but after hitters see him the initial shock is over.

The last time a big leaguer threw from both sides of the mound was Greg Harris in 1995, though even that was a publicity stunt. Harris retired after that season at the age of 39.

I can’t see him making it but who knows, some major league team may make him a late round pick and see what he can do in Class A.

Sammy Sosa Homers in Rangers winSammy caught Friday night after his bloop single

All the Texas Rangers needed to end their losing skid was a visit by the Boston Red Sox. Behind Robinson Tejeda the Rangers won 2-0 on Friday and on Saturday had their first offensive explosion and a Sammy Sosa homer to take the second game of the series.

The two run blast off of J.C. Romero was the 589th of Sosa’s career and came on the first pitch of the at-bat. The homer maked the 43rd different stadium Sosa has homered in tying Ken Griffey Jr and Fred McGriff for the most.

Following the homer the fans at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington gave Sosa a curtain call. Sosa now has 3 RBI this season and is 4-for-15 to start the year. Could Sammy have a secret weapon in his comeback?

Best of luck Sammin Slammy!
