Missions take Texas League title
By john • Sep 16th, 2007 • Category: brett dowdy, dirk hayhurst, san antonio missions, texas leagueThe San Antonio Missions held on 11-7 to take the Texas League Championship three games to one. Michael Ekstrom hadn’t pitched in over two weeks but took a no-hitter into the seventh and picking up a win. In total Ekstrom allowed two hits and three walks while striking out five.
Outfielders Will Venable, Brett Dowdy and Peter Ciofrone all had three hits each. The Missions scored seven runs in the first two innings alone. Matt Antonelli scored three times and Brett Dowdy recorded six RBI in the rout. Dowdy finished just a single short of the cycle.
This is the Missions first Texas League title since 2003. In 2003 the Missions were a farm team for the Seattle Mariners, this season is their first under the San Diego Padres.
A talented team with the likes of Nick Hundley and Chase Headley the Missions actually finished the first half in last place. When the standings reset for the second half the team immediatly turned it on and had already clinched a playoff berth with six games in the season left.
As of yet the Missions homepage is still trying to sell playoff tickets and only mentions a win in game one of the series. In the left hand corner is a box score, un beknownst to the operator (I suppose?) of the site the league winning game.
Congrats to the Missions. I didn’t get to attend as many games as I had hoped this season but I probably went to too many last season anyway. Plus I’m not really into giving my money to Burl Yarbrough and 5 dollars a game to the city of San Antonio for parking.
No word if there will be any kind of celebration for the team here in San Antonio.
Dirk entry
Dirk Hayhurst has a few more blogs up since the season is over. Here’s my favorite about some kids asking for an autograph. I don’t want to ruin the story so you’ll have to click.
