Mariners get a Dickey!

By john • Dec 6th, 2007 • Category: minnesota twins, r.a. dickey, seattle mariners

More then any other team today the Minnesota Twins seemed to lose player after player to the Rule 5 draft.

They couldn’t have expected anyone to want R.A. Dickey. After all Dickey spent all of last year in Nashville, the Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Twins signed the 33 year-old knuckleballer to a minor league deal last week. Today the Seattle Mariners selected him with the 12th pick of the Rule 5 draft.

Dickey was to contend for the fifth spot in the Twins rotation, now he will head to Seattle where he figures to compete for the fifth spot there but with tougher competition.

I will never understand why a guy with a 16-19 5.72 ERA in 266 innings over five years ever has interest.

Maybe it’s to be an anchor of a Triple-A staff? Over 11 years in the minors Dickey is 62-55 with a 4.37 ERA in 1140 innings. He has pitched in 276 minor league games, 149 of them starts.
