Bigbie, Hughes and Williams latest to head to Japan

By john • Dec 8th, 2007 • Category: dave williams, larry bigbie, thanksgiving, travis hughes, yokohama baystars

You can add Larry Bigbie, Travis Hughes and Dave Williams to the list of players headed to Japan. All three men have signed contracts with the Yokohama BayStars.

While I may not be much of an Orioles fan these days I can recall back to the five partial seasons Bigbie spent with the team. Born in Hobart, Indiana Bigbie was a first round pick out of Ball State in 1999.

Two years later he made it to the majors. Unfortunatley Bigbie only had ones eason in which he topped 300 AB. In that 2004 season Bigbie had career highs of 15 homers and 68 RBI. The following season he was expected to take on a larger role but sucumb to early season injuries and was traded to Colorado. In 2006 he yokohamabaystars.gifplayed just 17 games for the St. Louis Cardinals due to injuries and spent 2007 splitting time between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves minor league system.

I suppose cheering for him when the team put up Big-B on the scoreboard seems a little foolish now but dang it you gotta hope for something when watching the Orioles.

Travis Hughes

Hughes also has spent some time in the majors. From 2004-2006 Hughes pitched 24 games in relief and posted a 6.31 ERA for the Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals. Hughes spent last season as a member of the Boston Red Sox Triple-A team. While with Pawtucket he was 7-6 with 24 saves and a 1.91 ERA. The Red Sox never considered the 29 year old for a call up.

Dave Williams

Dave Williams was once one of the Pittsburgh Pirates promising starting pitchers a few years ago. In 2005 Williams began his fourth season on the major league roster and started 25 games. He posted a 10-11 record and a 4.41 ERA. In the offseason he was traded to the Cincinatti Reds for Sean Casey. After an awful stay in Cincinnatti he was shipped to New York where he spent the last two years. Last season in particular he pitched in just two games posting a 22.85 ERA for the big league club. The 28 year old Williams started 10 games in Triple-A posting a 3-4 record and a 3.96 ERA.

All three men are headed to play for the Yokohama BayStars making between $540,000-$580,000 a year.
