Non Roster Invitee: Adam Pettyjohn - Reds
By john • Mar 1st, 2008 • Category: adam pettyjohn, cincinatti reds, non roster inviteeSorry for the lack of a photo. There don’t seem to be any of Pettyjohn on the internet that I can access. I have some from when he was in Double-A in 2006 which I’ll post later.
A second round pick in 1998 Adam Pettyjohn has seemingly been stuck in the minors since. After putting up some fair numbers in the minors Pettyjohn received his lone call up to the big leagues in 2001. That year for the Detroit Tigers he would go 1-6 with a 5.82 ERA in 16 games.
After missing all of 2002 due to a colectomy he returned to the Tigers in 2003 but after just 19 games in Double-A with an ERA of 4 was released.
The next two seasons Pettyjohn would pitch in the minors for San Fransisco, Oakland, Seattle, Oakland (again), and finally Milwaukee in 2007.
Despite pitching well the last two seasons he has been unable to make it back to the majors. I saw Pettyjohn while he was a member of the San Antonio Missions (AA) in 2006. Initially he was used as a reliever before moving into the rotation. I don’t know much about the guy as he’d usually head out of the ballpark right after the game and was not very easy to access. He pitched well but was released by Seattle and later signed with Oakland. I heard but cannot confirm if he really had an option that if he did not make the majors by a certain date he could become a free agent.
The Cincinnati Reds signed Pettyjohn to a minor league contract with an invite to Spring Training. Pettyjohn who is just 30 years of age despite being around for so long.
The signings of Josh Fogg and Jeremy Affeldt have made Pettyjohn’s chances of making the Reds pretty much non existent. He’ll get a brief look by the big league club and probably head off to the minors. The Reds have more then a few creaky veterans on the team so his best bet for a major league return rests on a strong performance in Louisville.
In total Pettyjohn has spent 8 years in the minors with just one call up to the majors. His career minor league numbers are 48-44 with a 4.19 ERA over 179 career games.

John,
I am a fan of Adam’s and you are right, he should be in the show! I hope the Reds figure this out and bring him up so they can see what he has done.
Unfortunately for Adam he’s struggled at Triple-A this season. His strike out numbers are way down and he’s been hit at a .277 clip. Overall he is 7-4 but his ERA is an eye popping 5.40.
[...] was a non roster invitee to Spring Training by the Cincinnati Reds who we took a look at in March. At that time I speculated he would spend most of the year at the minor league level and if things [...]
