Why does Ken Griffey owe anyone money?

By john • May 16th, 2008 • Category: josh fogg, ken griffey jr

Today in the Dayton Daily News writer Hal McCoy wrote that Cincinnati Red’s outfielder Ken Griffey Jr repaid a debt to pitcher Josh Fogg in pennies.

Some fifth teen years ago I remember stock car driver Rusty Wallace paying NASCAR a fine in pennies loaded in a tractor trailer and since then there have been others.

So this isn’t the first time someone has repaid another individual with a freakishly large amount of money in copper Abe Lincolns but I can’t remember any athlete the caliber of Ken Griffey repaying a teammate this amount.

Why would Ken Griffey need $1,500 dollars from anyone? According to Baseball-Reference Griffey has made over $139 million in his 20 year career. That’s not even adding in the millions of dollars from selling his merchandise or advertising.

With the state of debit cards putting money at you fingertips with ease you have to wonder just why Ken Griffey needed the money?

Does Josh Fogg just walk around with $1,500 in his pockets at all times? With the way he’s been beaten around by the National League this year you would think he’d have to be worried about being mugged.
