Pavano to toss up gopher balls

New York Yankees pitc… uh, injury riddled Carl Pavano is set to appear in a big league stadium tomorrow night.

Though instead of trying to get big league hitters out he’ll be serving up batting practice fast balls but when you consider that the Yankees have gotten just 19 starts over the four year $39.95 million dollar contract he signed with the team prior to 2005 anything is something.

That the Yankees will have Pavano throw batting practice in Boston speaks volumes. In Boston the fans won’t know whether to cheer Pavano for giving up homers or to boo him.

Pavano will stop collecting money from the Yankees at the end of the season and the 32-year-old right hander hopes to add a few starts onto his resume as he looks for a job with another club next season.

Yankee fans have found numerous reasons to dislike Pavano who is just 5-6 with a 4.77 ERA in a stunning 19 starts over four years since joining the club. In addition he’s suffered a laundry list of injuries while in pinstripes.

In 2005 Pavano injured his right shoulder and during a spring training game in 2006 injured his buttocks. (I suppose all that cash wadded up could do that to you) Later in 2006 he broke two ribs while sitting in the back of a cab but waited nearly two weeks before telling Yankee officials.

He hit the disabled list early in 2007 with an elbow strain and opted for Tommy John surgery.

Pavano is 62-64 with a 4.27 ERA over parts of 9 big league seasons split between the Montreal Expos, Florida marlins and New York Yankees.
