Ranking the all time best pitchers

By john • Aug 13th, 2008 • Category: pitchers

Something that happens regularly is people trying to compare players to determine the best player of all time. Never mind that it’s often hard to determine the best player in a given season but try comparing guys based on decades of work, often when their decades of work are scores apart.

While I can’t ask everyone who reads this blog who they think the best pitcher of all time is, I am sure that if I asked for a list I’d get a different one from each person.

What are we using to rank these players? Stats? Longevity? A mid 90’s fastball or the skill to induce ground balls from dusk to dawn?

Some people believe that simply because a player took to the bump before their time they were better then those of today, others think the opposite.

Do we count just their pitching? What about their hitting, defense?

We’ll likely never hear the end of this discussion but I wouldn’t suspect anything less.

With that being said I’ve decided to throw out my picks for the best pitchers of the last 20 years.

  1. Greg Maddux
  2. Roger Clemens (Even though I’m pretty sure he did the roids I’ll put him on here for now)
  3. Tom Glavine
  4. Randy Johnson
  5. Mike Mussina - talk about your over looked pitcher…
  6. Pedro Martinez
  7. Mariano Rivera
  8. Trevor Hoffman
  9. John Smoltz
  10. Jamie Moyer
  11. Roy Halladay
  12. Tim Hudson
  13. Roy Oswalt

  1. If you have Halladay, Oswalt and Hudson on here, Peavy and/or Webb should be here too. Wait a minute, where is Johan Santanna?
