Teagarden’s explosion forcing Rangers hand

By john • Sep 16th, 2008 • Category: jarrod saltalamacchia, major leagues, max ramirez, taylor teagarden, texas rangers

Yesterday I read that the Boston Red Sox had interest in Texas Ranger catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. I figured it was just another baseball rumor, knowing that Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek was headed towards free agency.

Then something caught my eye. Then again, how could it not. Taylor Teagarden’s recent success has people abuzz. The 24-year-old Dallas native is sporting an absurd 1.397 OPS has knocked six balls over the wall and has driven in 17 runs all in just 36 at-bats at the big league level.

While the OPS will undobtly come down the success of Teagarden will likely force the Rangers front office to make a trade. In addition to Teagarden and Saltalamacchia, the team also has 24-year-old Max Ramirez who despite some struggles at the big league level this season more then made up for that at the minor league level.

Gerald Laird will be heading out of Texas when the season ends and it’s likely one of these young guys could be too. The Rangers will likely try to bolster a shabby rotation by using their depth at catcher.
