Adam Pettyjohn’s return to the big leagues
By john • Sep 24th, 2008 • Category: adam pettyjohn, cincinnati reds, major leaguesAdam Pettyjohn has returned to the big leagues. Make no mistake this is not a mirage or 2001 when he appeared in 16 games, inclduing 9 starts on his way to posting a 1-6 record and a 5.82 ERA.
It’s 2008 and the 31-year old Pettyjohn has traveled the minor league circuit as much as anyone. Since the last time the left hander appeared in the big leagues he has joined six different organizations.
Pettyjohn was a non roster invitee to Spring Training by the Cincinnati Reds who we took a look at in March. At that time I speculated he would spend most of the year at the minor league level and if things worked out well at Louisville he’d get a look at in the majors.
Obviously the Reds and my views of working out well differ a bit. Despite picking up 15 wins at the Triple-A level Pettyjohn displayed a 1.33 WHIP, allowed 188 hits in 174.1 innings and struck out just 95 batters. He had a 4.59 ERA while a member of the Bats.
Already since his call up mid-way though September he has appeared in two games for the Reds pitching a total of three innings, allowing a run. With the news that Edison Volquez will not pitch in his final start of the year Pettyjohn figures to make a spot start for the club during the teams final game of the year.
Oddly the Reds have not started a left handed pitcher all season making Pettyjohn’s start the first and only of the season.
While I’m a little surprised Pettyjohn recieved a call up I do wish him the best.
