Mark Reynolds swinging for history

By john • Sep 25th, 2008 • Category: adam dunn, bobby bonds, major leagues, mark reynolds, ryan howard

When Arizona Diamondbacks third basemen Mark Reynolds struck out during the second inning Wednesday he put his name in the record books.

Though it’s not on a list where most would want to be. Reynolds tied the major league record for strike outs in a reason with his 199th strike out of the year, trying Ryan Howards number from last season.

It marked the sixth time in the last four years that someone has topped Bobby Bonds 189 strike outs during the 1970 season. For 34 years Bonds name was atop the list for strike outs. No one wanted to pass Bonds on the list so much that in 2002 the Brewers sat infielder Jose Hernandez to avoid him breaking the record.

But that was the days of 2002. Players, general managers and fans feared large strike out totals. Now they are fine as long as you can hit the big fly.

Adam Dunn broke the big league record in 2004 and since then  even his total of 194 has been passed three times. Ryan Howard twice has recorded 195 or more strike outs in a year.

I don’t think this is a trend we should expect to see reversed anytime soon.
