Girardi expects Mussina to retire
By john • Nov 8th, 2008 • Category: major leagues, mike mussina, new york yankeesWhile Mike Mussina hasn’t told the Yankees whether he will retire or be back for one more season manager Joe Girardi revealed Friday that the 39-year-old pitcher told him he was probably going to retire at the end of last season.
Mussina recently was selected for his seventh Gold Glove and finished the 2008 season with 20 wins for the first time in his 18 year career.
“Moose told me after the season that he was probably going to retire,” manager Joe Girardi said before the annual dinner for Joe Torre’s Safe at Home Foundation. “I’ve said all along you’ve got to give a month or two to decide.”
Girardi and Mussina have not talked to each other since the end of last season. Mussina is a 270 game winner with a 3.68 career ERA.
