Wood dismissed by winter league team

Brandon Wood, 23, has again been sent him from winter ball. Wood who appeared in 55 games with the Los Angeles Angels was hitting just .167 after 13 games in the Dominican Winter League.
Wood was also released from his Mexican winter league team last year after hitting just .152 in nine games.
The front office is taking the issue rather lightly “We put weight on the winter-ball season, but we’ll monitor how he is in spring training,” general manager Tony Reagins said. “He’ll get an opportunity to fight for a job, whether it be at shortstop or at third base.”
Something however tells me that privately the Angels have concerns. After all Wood is their top prospect and was expected to man either shortstop or third base this coming year.
In six years in the minors theĀ 23 year old has hit 138 home runs, connected for 194 doubles and has compiled a .892 OPS.
Once seen as a shortstop Wood was briefly moved to third base in 2007 but returned to short this season in Triple-A.
“You’ve got to perform pretty much right off the plane,” Angels minor league director Abe Flores said. General Manager Tony Reagins said the dismissal would not extinguish Wood’s chances of winning a roster spot in spring training. Currently the Angels have Erick Aybar at shortstop and Chone Figgins at third base. Should Wood prove he is worthy of a roster spot Reagins said that Figgins would move to left field or second base.
