A week after the Texas Rangers designated Wes Littleton for assignment the Boston Red Sox announced that they did a little Black Thursday shopping and picked up the 26-year-old sinker ball throwing right hander for two players to be named later or cash.

Littleton hasn’t been as effective since his rookie season in which he posted a 1.73 ERA in 36 1/3 innings and held the league to a .189 average against.

The Red Sox added the Cal State-Fullerton product to their active roster bringing the total to 38.

Over parts of three big league seasons Littleton has a 3.65 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP in 102 1/3 innings as a major leaguer. Outside of Arlington, he has a 2.70 ERA in 53 1/3 innings something the Red Sox hope to take advantage of.

Littleton has been successful in keeping the ball on the ground, allowing just 15 fly balls last year compared to 31 grounders. Among active hurlers with at least 100.0 innings, he ranks 14th with a career ground ball percentage of 71.5 (196 GB/78 FB). The Red Sox expect to first use Littleton in early relief and evaulate him from there.
