Could the gambler be folding?

Known as the gambler during his big league career 44-year-old left hander Kenny Rogers has always seemed to have an extra card up his sleeve.

But when asked Monday about negotiations with Rogers, Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said: “I’ve not heard a word from him.”

This is a bit of a surprise since Rogers previously indicated that he planned to pitch in 2009.

He finished 2008 with a 9-13 record and a 5.70 ERA after missing most of 2007. It was his worst season in which he started 20 games since 2001 when he played with the Texas Rangers.

Rogers won 17 games as recently as 2006 and considering his strike out numbers, walk ratio and hits per innings pitched weren’t much higher then his career norms it’s had to say what 2009 would hold for the Georgia native.

It does however appear that should Rogers return it will almost certainly be with the Tigers.

With 20 years of big league experience Rogers is 219-156 with a 4.27 ERA while spending time with Texas (three times), both New York teams, Oakland, Minnesota and Detroit.
