The Boston Red Sox have signed left hander Billy Traber to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Traber, 29, pitched briefly for the New York Yankees last season posting a 7.02 ERA while the league hit .273 against him.
The club is explected to look at the former first round pick as a situational lefty out of the pen as he has held lefties to a .243 average in his career compared to the .324 that right handers have compiled.
Once figured to be a front of the rotation starter Traber has not been quite the same pitcher since Tommy John surgery forced him to miss most of 2003 and all of 2004.
Traber spent most of last season pitching as a reliever for the Yankees Triple-A affilaite, Scranton-Wilkes Barre. There Traber posted a 3.40 ERA in 47 2/3 innings.
A big leaguer for parts of four seasons Traber is 12-14 with a 5.54 ERA in 95 games split between the Cleveland Indians, Washington Nationals and Yankees.
