Mike visits Wes Obermuller on the mound

“When I came up, I had good stuff, but two arm surgeries later, I said to myself, ‘I better figure this out,’ I couldn’t survive in the fat part of the zone. That’s when I started getting into the mental part of the game.” - Mike Maddux, 2005

Mike Maddux is the older brother of Greg Maddux. In 1986 both Maddux brothers made it to the major leagues. They even faced each other in a start. The Cubs behind Greg were victorious that day. Mike slightly had a better season out of the two Maddux brothers. In the second meeting against his brother Greg the older Maddux prevailed. However, it wasn’t long before Mike found his true home; the bullpen.

Mike Maddux pitched for a number of teams and could always be counted for a few outs. While his career may not have been as successful as his younger brother the older Maddux has found a way to stay around the game. After being released in 2000 by the Houston Astros Maddux retired. After the season he became a pitching coach for the Milwaukee Brewers.
