Greg Maddux pitched 7 strong innings in Philadelphia notching his 10th win of the season as the Padres outlasted the Phillies 14-3.
The win was his 343rd of his career and the 20th consecutive season in which Maddux has won atleast 10 games, a new major league record. The old record had been held by some guy named Cy Young. (1891-1909)
When notified of the achivement Maddux simply replied “I didn’t know that. That’s cool. I’m just glad I’m still pitching.”
And pitching is what he did Friday night. Maddux scattered 7 hits in his 7 innings of work striking out one. He’s run his string of innings without a walk to 35 now.
Josh Bard was 5-for-6 with three RBI, while Kevin Kouzmanoff had his first 4 hit game of his career. Adrian Gonzalez hit two homers as did Milton Bradley.
The Padres were trailing 3-2 before scoring 12 runs from the fifth inning on. They’ve now won three in and row and have two more in Philadelphia before a four game series against Arizona.
Maddux’s next start figures to be August 30th against Micah Owings.
Greg Maddux and Jamie Moyer will be doing the pitching tonight as the San Diego Padres face off against the Phillies in Philadelphia.
This matchup will feature two guys who have won over 200 games and are over 40. Moyer will turn 45 in November and Maddux is 41.
On the season Moyer is 11-9 with a 4.97 ERA including his last start in which he was torched for seven earned runs in four-plus innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Maddux on the other hand picked up career win 342 against the Houston Astros after allowing just a solo home run to Lance Berkman in the first inning of a start in which he lasted six. He allowed just one other hit in the game and has not allowed a walk in 28 innings. He also recorded his 40th multihit game of his career. For the season he is 9-9 with a 3.90 ERA.
I don’t want to doom Maddux’s chances at 15 win guys but the projection thing over at ESPN.com has him reaching only 12. With roughly 8 starts left he would need to win 6 of them to reach the number.
Greg Maddux will be going for win 342 today against 24 year old Matt Albers. Albers, a Houston navtive, will be making his 11st start of the season. He’s 3-5 with a 5.99 ERA on the season and has been placed back into the rotation due to an injury to Chris Sampson.
On August 14th against the Dodgers Albers allowed 3 runs in 6.2 innings recording a plethera of outs on grondballs.
Maddux on the other hand pitched 5.2 scoreless last time out against the Colorado Rockies. He lowered his ERA to 4.00 and picked up his 8th win despite allowing eight hits. He also struck out four.
Game time is 1:05 PT so that’s 4:05 ET folks. The game will be on Channel 4 for our San Diego viewers and FSN for all of us in Texas.
The Padres erupted for 6 runs in the 2nd inning off of Jeff Francis and Greg Maddux pitched into the 6th as the Padres defeated the Rockies 8-0 Tuesday.
The win was the 8th of the season for Maddux, and the 341st of his career.
Greg Maddux will be going for the 341st win of his career for the 9th time on Monday when he faces the Colorado Rockies. Despite pitching well in his last start the Padres fell 2-1 to the St. Louis Cardinals dropping Maddux to 7-9 on the season. In that start he retired 18 of the final 19 batters he faced.
On the mound for the Rockies will be Jeff Francis. Francis is 8-0 in his last 11 starts and is 11-1 in his last 17. He is only 13 strikeouts from his career high as well.
This matchup features two pitchers on opposite ends of streaks. Hopefully Maddux can finally pick up a win as he’s been stuck on 340 wins since June.
Pardon the lateness of this post. I’ve been quite busy of late with weddings, Carrie becoming pregnant and work.
Tom Glavine picked up his 300th career win Sunday. Glavine did so against the Chicago Cubs. The win on August 5th was his 10th of the season for the first place Mets.

Greg Maddux allowed 2 runs in the first inning before pitching 5 more scoreless innings to take his 9th loss of the season.
Maddux had a dobule off of Cardinals pitcher Kip Wells but the Padres were unable to do anything with it or the other 5 hits.
Wells improved to 5-13 on the season. Maddux would need to win 8 of his final 10 starts to reach 15 wins this season. He is 7-9 with a 4.15 ERA on the season. He has been stuck on 340 wins since June despite pitching well thoughout July and into August.
The Padres are currently second in the NL West.
