Scott Boras told the New York Post saying that Greg Maddux is nearly certain to retire.
“He hasn’t made a final decision, but for now it is doubtful he will play (any longer),” Boras said at the GM meetings. “As it stands now, he is not going to play.”
If true Maddux would finish his career with 355 wins, 4 consecutive Cy Young awards, and a closet full of Gold Gloves.

Greg Maddux and the San Diego Padres have come to terms on a one year deal worth $10 million dollars. The Padres had held an $11 million dollar option while Maddux had a $8.75 million option following the competion of his last contact. Had Maddux pitched 200 innings instead of 198 last year a $10 million dollar option would have kicked in automatically.
Last season Maddux was 14-11 with a 4.14 ERA.

He also has a player option that starts at 6.5 million for 2008 and incentives that could make the second season worth 10 million if he reaches 180 innings according to the Padres offical site. Maddux has topped 180 innings in each of his 19 full seasons in the majors.
With guys like Gil Meche, Ted Lilly and Vincente Padilla making in surplus of that number this almost seems like a bargin for a pitcher with no real injury history. Not to mention the guy is a 300 game winner and seems to pick up 15 wins every season.

Greg Maddux and the San Diego Padres came to terms today for a contract for the 2007 season. Maddux will also have a player option for the 2008 season.
There had been rumors of Maddux singing with the Padres dating back to the 2003 off season. Maddux instead signed with the Cubs. Thoughout his time with the Cubs rumors arose that Maddux would be traded to the Padres. Maddux was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers before the trading deadline last season.
He joins a rotation of Jake Peavy, Chris Young and Clay Hensley. The number 31 has already been retired by the Padres for hall of famer Dave Winfield.
Maddux is 15 wins behind Roger Clemens (should he retire… ha ha) for second all time in wins following the dead ball era. Warren Spahn had 363 career wins, despite missing years due to World War II.
