Greg Maddux has made five start since recording his 350th win and unfortunantley remains stuck at that number.
Tuesday he will face Dodger rookie left hander Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw will be making the fourth start of his career, Maddux the 721st of his.
For the season Kershaw is 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA while Maddux is 3-4 with a 3.48. The game will be in San Diego where Maddux has posted a 1.73 ERA on the year.
The Padres have scored three or fewer runs in eight games when Maddux was on the mound.
Greg Maddux will again be going for milestone win number 350. In his last outing he was two outs away before Trevor Hoffman gave up a game-tying homer to Bengie Molina.
Maddux had pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out five. He threw 75 pitches, 51 for strikes. This came on the heels of one of his worst outings ever when he allowed six runs in the first inning against the Diamondbacks. In that game he threw 113 pitches, the most he had tossed in a start in 2 1/2 seasons.
The opponent is not an easy one. Maddux faces the Philadelphia Phillies and Cole Hamels. After posting a 0.82 ERA in his first three outings, Hamels has a 5.79 ERA in his past two, having allowed nine runs in 14 innings. He threw 121 pitches in his April 23 outing against Milwaukee — striking out 11 — but lost because he gave up two home runs to Prince Fielder. Hamels has never beaten the Padres, the team for which he grew up rooting, in three career meetings.
Greg Maddux and Jamie Moyer will be doing the pitching tonight as the San Diego Padres face off against the Phillies in Philadelphia.
This matchup will feature two guys who have won over 200 games and are over 40. Moyer will turn 45 in November and Maddux is 41.
On the season Moyer is 11-9 with a 4.97 ERA including his last start in which he was torched for seven earned runs in four-plus innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Maddux on the other hand picked up career win 342 against the Houston Astros after allowing just a solo home run to Lance Berkman in the first inning of a start in which he lasted six. He allowed just one other hit in the game and has not allowed a walk in 28 innings. He also recorded his 40th multihit game of his career. For the season he is 9-9 with a 3.90 ERA.
I don’t want to doom Maddux’s chances at 15 win guys but the projection thing over at ESPN.com has him reaching only 12. With roughly 8 starts left he would need to win 6 of them to reach the number.
Greg Maddux will be going for win 342 today against 24 year old Matt Albers. Albers, a Houston navtive, will be making his 11st start of the season. He’s 3-5 with a 5.99 ERA on the season and has been placed back into the rotation due to an injury to Chris Sampson.
On August 14th against the Dodgers Albers allowed 3 runs in 6.2 innings recording a plethera of outs on grondballs.
Maddux on the other hand pitched 5.2 scoreless last time out against the Colorado Rockies. He lowered his ERA to 4.00 and picked up his 8th win despite allowing eight hits. He also struck out four.
Game time is 1:05 PT so that’s 4:05 ET folks. The game will be on Channel 4 for our San Diego viewers and FSN for all of us in Texas.
Greg Maddux will be going for the 341st win of his career for the 9th time on Monday when he faces the Colorado Rockies. Despite pitching well in his last start the Padres fell 2-1 to the St. Louis Cardinals dropping Maddux to 7-9 on the season. In that start he retired 18 of the final 19 batters he faced.
On the mound for the Rockies will be Jeff Francis. Francis is 8-0 in his last 11 starts and is 11-1 in his last 17. He is only 13 strikeouts from his career high as well.
This matchup features two pitchers on opposite ends of streaks. Hopefully Maddux can finally pick up a win as he’s been stuck on 340 wins since June.
A reminder that the Padres/Astros game on Saturday will be on Fox today.
Maddux will be looking for his 8th win of the season and Roy Oswalt will be looking for his tenth.
The Padres also acquired Scott Hairston from the Diamondbacks yesterday, though he is currently not listed on the active roster. Hairston is the younger brother of Texas Ranger infielder/outfielder Jerry Hairston. He was hitting .222/.301/.358 in 76 games for the Diamondbacks.
When Greg Maddux takes the mound in Houston today he will be looking for his first win in six starts. Despite leaving with leads in his last two starts he has been stuck on 341 wins. Reports are that Maddux has increased movement on his pitches of late and appears to be geared up for a strong finish.
Going for the Astros will be Roy Oswalt (9-6, 3.80) Oswalt missed his last start due to soreness in his upper chest. Oswalt won 55 games from 2004-2006 and is 6-1 with a 2.44 ERA in his career against the Padres. In addition he is 6-1 with a 2.48 ERA on the year.
While the Padres are 1.5 games out of the west, the Asros are 13 games under .500 and appear to be ready to unload a few older players such as Mike Lamb, Dan Wheeler and Morgan Ensberg.
Here’s the word from mlb.com about Greg’s next start Monday in Colorado.
Padres:: Maddux threw five shutout innings against the Mets on Wednesday, but he didn’t a decision, which is good news after lossing three consecutive games. The veteran right-hander allowed four hits and tied his season-high strikeout total with six. He threw just 65 pitches, 49 for strikes, and said he was mentally burned out by the time he exited the game. Maddux felt like his left hamstring was cramping after he ran to first base a couple times, said it was feeling better after the game.
Rockies: Francis has struggled with his fastball command of late, and it’s led to some poor outings. But on Wednesday afternoon against the Pirates, he took advantage of their aggressiveness by throwing offspeed stuff — even when behind in the count — limiting Pittsburgh to two runs and six hits over seven innings while striking out six.
Here’s wha mlb.com had to say about Maddux’s next start Wednesday July 18.
John Maine -Mets: Maine got off to a rocky start on Friday against the Reds, allowing a double, a single, a walk and a grand slam to the first four batters he faced, ending his four-game winning streak. Maine struck out three and walked three, tossing just 4 2/3 innings before leaving the game.
Greg Maddux - Padres: Maddux’s career-long struggles against the D-backs continued Friday, when he gave up four runs on nine hits in four innings. After retiring the first two batters in the contest, Maddux gave up hits to the next five, with three runs crossing the plate. The right-hander has now lost three straight starts, over which he has compiled an 8.80 ERA. Before that stretch, Maddux had gone 3-1 with a 2.82 ERA over six consecutive quality starts.
This time when Greg Maddux faces his old team he’ll do so against Kyle Davies. Maddux was charged with six earned runs in 6 1/3 innings in his last start.
Davies (3-7, 5.85) gave up five earned runs in his last start against the Los Angeles Dodgers, lasting just 2 innings.
Personally I never have a good feeling about Greg’s line when he’s facing a former team.
