Maddux to turn 42

Category: Uncategorizedjohn @ 8:40 pm

Just a reminder that Greg turns 42 tomorrow. He’s always said he thought it would be cool to be the oldest guy in the league after being the youngest when he started.

Well… Jamie Moyer is still going strong at 45 so I guess Greg is going to just have to keep paying for a few more seasons.

Maddux picks up win against Cubs

Category: Uncategorizedjohn @ 5:57 pm

Even though it was just a spring training game it’s worth nothing that Greg Maddux held the Cubs scoreless for five innings in a rain shortened game. Maddux pitched four scoreless a few days ago in a minor league game.

Maddux to miss spring start

Category: Uncategorizedjohn @ 5:58 pm

Greg Maddux missed a scheduled spring start due to abdominal pain. The Padres say he hurt himself during one of his last pitches of his last start.I suppose some of us will now laugh about his statements about how running in the outfield during spring training games is stupid.

Either way it’s not thought to be anything significant and Maddux said that had this been the regular season he would have been pitching.

Lopez released

Former teammate Javy Lopez was released Monday by the Colorado Rockies. Lopez was hitting .375 with a .625 slugging percentage but was cut due to the improvements in youngster Chris Iannetta’s game. Iannetta now looks likely to start the season as the Rockies opening day catcher with Yorvit Torrealba playing backup.

Javy says he does not want to play as a backup on any team unless it’s the Atlanta Braves, who currently have Brian McCann as their starter and Bryan Pena as their backup.

He’s also said he doesn’t have the desire to play DH, which severely limits the number of interested teams to about zero.

Best of luck to Javy but even he said it’s not about the money at this point.

Maddux wins record-tying 16th Gold Glove

Category: Uncategorizedjohn @ 6:42 pm

Greg Maddux won his 16th gold glove tying Jim Kaat for the record. Maddux has won the gold glove 16 of the last 17 seasons with 2003 being the exception.

Omar Vizquel won his 11th, Andruw Jones won his 9th and even Albert Pujols (wtf) and Brad Ausmus (third, even though throwing out 22% of runners would be considered Gawd awful in any season) were given out the award.
