Timeline 1993 - 2003

On December 9th 1992 Greg signed a deal to play for the Atlanta Braves. The Cub fans had been hopeful that Maddux would return to Chicago but in the end the Braves offered better possibilities for the rising star. Greg may of won his first game as a Cub and his 300th as a Cub bit he won 194 as a Brave, not to mention three Cy Young’s and ten Gold Gloves. The Braves continued their dominance during his time there winning the division each season and the World Series in 1995.

1993
April 5
In his first match up against the Cubs, Greg goes 8.1 innings allowing five hits and picking up the win as the Braves beat the Cubs 1-0.
October 7
Greg allows just a solo homerun to Andres Galaragga and four hits total as the Braves beat the Rockies 10-1.

Season Highlights
Collected his second consecutive Cy Young Award in 1993, and became the second player to win the award with two different clubs. He was also the fifth player to win the award 2 years in a row.
He won his 4th strait Gold Glove Award.
Notched 20 victories for the second straight year in 1993.
Named The Sporting News 1993 Pitcher of the Year. He became only the second player to win the award with 2 different clubs.
Led the league with a 2.36 ERA and led NL pitchers in putouts for the fifth year in a row
. His 39 outputs tie a record that he reached in 1990 and 1991. He pitched more than 230 inning for the 6th year in a row.
The Braves score just 15 runs in his 10 losses.

1994
April 24
Had a then career-high 11 strikeouts vs. Pittsburgh
July 2
Greg begins a streak of 18 wins 0 losses in 20 road starts. Compiling an ERA of 0.99 (17 ER, 154.2 IP). The streak lasted through the end of the 1995 season.

July 12
Started for the NL in the All-Star Game at Pittsburgh. (ND, 3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K)

August
Named NL Player of the Week for August 1-7.

Season Highlights
Became the first pitcher to win 3 straight Cy Young Awards. He was the 10th player to win the Cy Young unanimously. Marking the 13th time it has been done.
Led the league in ERA with a 1.56 and tied Montreal’s Ken Hill in wins with 16.
Claimed his fifth straight Rawlings Gold Glove Award and led the league in total chances for pitchers with 62.
Named The Sporting News Pitcher of the Year.
Compiled third-best ERA in majors since 1919 (Bob Gibson, 1.12, ‘68; Dwight Gooden, 1.53, ‘85).
Set a Major League record by finishing 1.09 ahead of the A’s Steve Ontiveros, who posted the second-best ERA in the majors at 2.65. Maddux’s ERA was 2.65 below the league ERA of 4.21, the greatest differential in modern day history.
His 1.56 ERA set a Braves’ club record, surpassing Phil Niekro’s 1.87 in 1967
Became the first Braves’ pitcher to lead the league in ERA for two consecutive seasons. He allowed the fewest earned runs (35) in franchise history (based on 180.0 IP).
Led the NL with 10 complete games. Greg’s 10 complete games are a career high (matched again in 1995) and were more than any other NL team had except the Dodgers (13).
Five of his last seven starts were complete games.

Beings on a 10 game winning streak lasting till August 4th.

Pitched his first career one-hitter at Houston (9.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K). His previous best had been a three-hitter.

June 3
Begins 51.0 consecutive innings without allowing a walk lasting until July 13.

July 1
Matched his career-best with 11 strikeouts versus Philadelphia.
Pitcher of the Month for July. (4-0, 1.27 ERA 49K, 49.2 IP)

July 13
Streak of 51 innings without a walk is snapped when he walks Joey Hamilton, the Padres pitcher. Hamilton is a .041 career hitter.

August 14
Missed his first start as a member of the Braves vs. Florida with the flu.

August 20 - September 5
Hurled four straight complete games.

August 26
Defeating the Cubs Maddux ties a major league record by notching his 16th consecutive road win.

September 16
Set a Major League record with his 17th straight win on the road at Cincinnati (ended up with 18). Beings streak of 21.0 consecutive scoreless innings lasting until September 27th.

September
Pitcher of the Month. Marking the fourth time in his career he has won the award.

October 7
The Braves win the NLDS over the Rockies. Maddux picks up the win as Fred McGriff homers twice.

October 21
In Game 1 of the 1995 World Series he pitched 9 scoreless innings, giving up just 2 hits against the Indians. The Indians starter is Orel Hershier. The two teams allow just five hits total, which ties a WS record for fewest hits by two teams.

November 13
Won the Cy Young for the 4th time, winning it unanimously for the second straight season. Sandy Koufax is the only other pitcher to win the Cy Young unanimously in consecutive seasons (1965-66)

Season Highlights
Maddux picked up his fourth consecutive Cy Young award.
Selected to the NL. All-Star team, but did not pitch. Maddux earned his sixth consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Award. Named The Sporting News Pitcher of the Year
With his 1.63 ERA, Greg became the first ML. pitcher since Walter Johnson in 1918-19 to have an ERA of less than 1.70 in two consecutive seasons.
Maddux’s ERA in 1994 was 1.56.
Led the majors in ERA and tied for the lead with 19 wins.
His ERA was 2.55 below the NL. average 4.18, as he led the league in ERA for the third straight year.
Walked just 23 batters the entire season in 209.2 innings pitched, an average of 0.99 free passes per 9.0 innings, tops in the majors.
Had a ML. high 10 complete games for the second straight season, equaling his career-high.
Became 1st pitcher in history to post a .900 winning percentage (.905) with 20 or more decisions. Was 2nd in the majors with a .197 opponents batting average against.
Also, tied for 1st in the NL. in IP (209.2) and shutouts (3) and was 3rd in strikeouts (181).

1996
April 11
A loss to the Padres snaps his MLB record of 18 straight road wins.
April
Won four of five decisions in April with a 2.17 ERA and finished the year with 10-6 record with a 2.22 ERA (34 ER in 137.2 IP) in last 20 starts.

May 3
Had a streak of 151 consecutive starts without allowing more than five earned runs (since June 26, 1991) end in a 6-2 loss to the Phillies. He also allowed his first grand slam to Benito Santiago.

June 17
The Braves beat the Padres as Greg picks up his first win in a month.

September 23
Greg won the last regular season game at Fulton County stadium. (5 IP, 4h, 1er, 0 BB, 1 k) Braves reliever Mike Bielecki picked up the save being the last regular season pitcher on the mound.

October 16
The Braves even the NLCS at three games behind Greg’s 3-1 win.

October 21
The Braves jump out to a 2-0 series lead over the Yankees after Greg shuts out the Yankees 4-0

October
Went 1-1 with an ERA of 1.72 in the 1996 World Series. Was saddled with the 3-2 loss in Game 6 of the Series, which clinched the win for the Yankees.

Selected to the All-Star team for the fifth time in his career, and third consecutive time, but did not pitch.
Won his 7th consecutive Gold Glove (1 error in 109 total chances).
Completed 9th consecutive season with at least 15 wins.
Ranked second in the league in ERA (2.72). Became the only Braves starting pitcher to have an ERA less than 3.00 four straight seasons (2.36, 1.56, 1.63, 2.72).
Finished first in the NL. in fewest walks per 9.0 innings pitched at 1.0, second in innings pitched (245.0), tied for second in games started (35), tied for third in complete games (five), and ninth in opponents batting average against (.241).
Pitched 200+ innings for ninth straight season.

1997
May 27
First start in a stretch witch he would not allow more than 2 ER in 10 starts. He went 6-0 with a 1.18 ERA in that 10-game span, which included a string of 32.0 IP without permitting an ER.
June 13
Begins streak of 36.0 IP without a walk, it would last until July 2. The Braves lose to the Orioles in a Interleague meeting of teams with the best records. The Orioles starter Jimmy Key picks up the win as Greg is saddled with the loss after allowing four runs in the sixth.

June 17
Starts a 10 game winning streak lasting until August 22. It matches a career best.

July 2
Throws only 86 pitches in a 2-0 win against the Yankess.

July 22
Throws only 78 pitches in a 4-1 win against the Cubs. It’s the lowest pitch total since Bob Tewksbury threw just 76 pitches in 1990.

August
Signed a contract worth $57.5 million to stay with the Braves through 2002.

September 1
Begins a streak of 38.0 IP without a walk, lasting until September 22.

September 30
The Braves score a run in the first and one more in the second as Greg holds off the Astros giving the Braves a series lead in the NLDS.

Greg has the lowest ERA over a 6-year span of any pitcher since World War II, having compiled a 2.14 ERA since ‘92 (339 ER in 1424.1 IP).
Only Braves’ starter to have an ERA below 3.00 for five straight years.

1998
August 18
Won his 200th career game with a win over the Giants in a 8-4 win. He became just the 94th pitcher to accomplish the feat.
June 2
Recorded 100th win as a Brave. He also set a career high with 13K’s against the Blue Jays.

July 21
Greg has his 7 game win streak against the Cubs snapped.

August 18
Allowing only one earned run to lower his league leading era, Greg picks up career win #200 in the Braves victory over the Giants. The Braves have nine hits, all doubles.

September 8
Recorded his 2000th career strikeout against the Expos.

September 17
Denny Neagle picks up his 15th win of the season. The Braves will have four starters with 15 wins as Neagle joins John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Greg.

Season Highlights
Named the All-Star starter by Jim Leyland, his seventh selection (2.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 K).
Earned 9th consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove.
Claimed his fourth ERA title (2.22), all of which have been achieved as a Brave (1993-95, 1998).
Produced his 11th consecutive season with at least 15 wins (18) and 200.0 or more innings pitched (251.0) while striking out a career-high 204 batters.
Threw a career-high 5 shutouts along with 9 complete games, the most since he had 10 in 1995.

1999
April 6
Greg hits a homerun off of Chad Ogea. He also has a two run single. Both hits come in the second inning. He becomes the first pitcher since Todd Stottlemeyer in 1996 to have two hits in the same inning.
April 18
The Braves pound the Rockies 20-5, scoring 10 in the 9th inning. Maddux is the lone Brave to not notch a hit.

May 4
Gave up Grand Slam to Mark McGwire. It’s only the second grand slam allowed in his career.

May 30
Hits second homerun of season off of Kevin Brown.

June 16
In a 3-1 win over the Astros, Maddux recorded 10 K, his most since fanning a career-high 13 Blue Jays June 27, 1998.

July 10
Dr. Kozarsky performed LASIK eye surgery on Greg. Two days latter Maddux led the Braves to a 8-1 win over the Red Sox. The surgery will allow him to pitch without glasses or contacts.

August 27
He missed his scheduled start because of a chipped bone in his right wrist incurred while diving after a John Vander Wal foul pop Aug. 21

September
Allowed third grand slam to John Olerud of the Mets. The Braves lost the game 9-2.

October 12
The Braves beat the Mets 4-2 to take game one of the NLCS. Maddux picks up the win and catcher Eddie Perez hits a homerun.

October
In 1999, he lost his first ever Divisional Series game, as he went 7.0 IP, and gave up 10 hits and 2 earned runs in Game 1.
He walked Craig Biggio, the only batter he faced in a relief appearance during the 7th inning of Game 3.
He went 1-0 in two games during the NLCS. Lost Game 1 of the 1999 World Series, despite holding a 1-0 lead going into the 8th inning.

Season Highlights
Earned his 10th consecutive Gold Glove award.
In 1999, he went 19-9 with an ERA of 3.57 over 214.1 innings pitched. His ERA was the highest Maddux had recorded since 1987 (5.61 with the Cubs) and the first time he had an ERA over 3.00 since 1991 (3.35).
He failed to record one shutout, the first time in a full season.
Recorded his 12th consecutive season with 15 or more wins and 19 for the fourth time.

2000
May 8
Struck out 10 against the Marlins.
June 3
For the first time in his career Greg allows hits to the first four batters. Maddux goes on to allow 13 hits over 5.2 innings. Roger Clemens of the Yankees is just as bad and neither get a decision.

June 14
Greg makes his 387th putout to break Jack Morris’ Major League record for putouts by a pitcher.

September 2
Won game at Houston, 8-6, despite allowing 5 runs in the first inning for the second straight outing (also permitted 5 runs in the first inning Aug. 28 at CIN), after having gone more than 10 years without surrendering a 5-run first (others: July 18, 1987, at SF, and June 6, 1990, at Pit)

September 18
In a win against the Mets, Greg extends his scoreless inning streak to 29.

September 23
Struck out 13 Expos matching a career high in a complete game shutout.

September 28
Streak of 39.1 consecutive scoreless innings ends. The streak was the second longest since Orel Hershiser’s record 59.0-inning stretch in 1988 (Gregg Olson shut out his opponents for 41.0 straight innings in 1989-90)

September
Wins his sixth Pitcher of the Month Award.
Hurled back-to-back shutouts on Sept. 7, 4-0 over the D’backs in Atlanta, and 4-0 over the Marlins Sept. 13 in Atlanta helped him to a 5-1 record with a 2.03 ERA for the month.
Struck out 2 in 4.1 innings of Game 1 of the Divisional
Series against St. Louis, and gave up 7 runs (5 earned), thanks in part to bad defense behind him. It is the shortest post season outing of his career.

Season Highlights
Compiled another Cy Young-caliber season with 19 wins and a 3.00 ERA. Placed third in the Cy Young voting behind Randy Johnson and Tom Glavine.
Finished T1st in the NL with 3 SHO, 1st with a 1.5 BB/9.0 IP ratio, 2nd with 249.1 IP, T3rd with 19 wins and 6 CGs, 3rd with a 3.00 ERA and T7th with a .238 Opp BA.
The Braves scored 153 runs in Maddux’s 35 starts (4.4 runs/game). However, Atlanta scored only 15 runs in Maddux’s 9 losses. Allowed a career high 19 home runs…Averaged 92 pitches a start.
180 wins since 1991 are the most in the majors.

2001
April 11
The Braves beat the Mets 2-0. Maddux combines with Mike Remlinger and John Rocker for a one hitter.
May 2
Greg strikes out 14 to set a career high in a 1-0 win over the Brewers. He strikes out 8 of the last 10 as he hurls his 100th complete game.

May 25
Greg becomes the first Brave pitcher since Dick Rudolph in 1916 to pitch two 1-0 shutouts in the same month.

June 20
Begins what would be a National League record by not issuing a walk for 72.1 IP over 11 starts June 20-Aug. 12.

June
Maddux went 5-0 with a 2.13 ERA in June, winning his 8th Pitcher of the Month Award.

July 5
Greg picks up his 250th career win against the Phillies.

July 17
Maddux picks up his 34th shutout in a 4-0 win. He strikes out nine and walks none.

July 22
Greg picks up his 9th straight win. The Braves beat the Expos 8-2 it is the first ever relief appearance for John Smoltz.

July
The Professor goes 5-0, 2.82 ERA winning NL Pitcher of the Month honors for the 9th time. No other pitcher has more than 5 of the awards.

August 7
Maddux sets the NL record for consecutive innings without allowing a walk. The old mark of 68 innings had been held by Christy Matthewson and Randy Jones.

August 12
Greg ends his consecutive innings without a walk at 72.1 innings as he intentionally walks Steve Finley.

August 22
Ben Davis got a walk ending a streak of 84.0 innings or 340 batters without an unintentional walk. The streak began in the 2nd inning of the June 20th game against the Marlins. After beating the Padres he went on his longest winless streak lasting out the season. It was his longest since making 7 straight winless starts June 11-July 11, 1991, as a Cub (0-3, 4 ND).

September22
Left game with a hyper-extended right elbow, after giving up singles to first two batters he faced, Matt Lawton and Edgardo Alfonzo.

November 6
Greg is award his 12th straight Gold Glove award.

Season Highlights
Became only the 2nd pitcher in Major League history to win at least 15 games for at least 14 straight seasons.
Earned his 12th straight Rawlings Gold Glove Award.
Selected to 2001 All Star Team. Declined invitation from manager Bobby Valentine, saying he had plans to spend the week with his family. Then suggested teammate John Burkett to fill his spot.
Led the NL with a 1.0 BB/9.0 IP ratio, T-1st with 3 SHO, 4th with a 3.05 ERA and 233.0 IP, T5th with 17 wins, T7th with 3 CG and a 3.43 road ERA, and 10th with a 2.78 home ERA.

2002
September 22
The Braves beat the Marlins and Greg ties Cy Young as the only pitchers to have 15 wins in consecutive 15 years.
November 14
Greg is awarded his 13th straight Gold Glove.

Season Highlights
Equaled Cy Young’s streak of 15 years of 15 or more wins.
Won 13th Straight Rawlings Gold Glove. Led NL with 3.16 fielding chances per game.
Allowed 0 ER in 12 of 34 starts.

2003
February 17
Agreed to a one year contract with the Braves
April 13
Maddux Started the 2003 season 0-3 and had a 11.05 ERA before picking up his first victory on the 13th of April against the Phillies.

April 23
Maddux went 7 innings allowing 0 ER against the Cardinals allowing only 3 hits and striking out 1.

April 29
Maddux won his third game of the season as he held the Astros to one run on 5 hits and striking out 5.

May 30
First meeting against Tom Glavine. Greg goes 5 innings allowing 7 hits 2 ER BB 2K picking up his 4th win of the season. Glavine goes 7 innings 9 H 5ER 4BB K in the loss, falling to 5-5 on the season.

July 17
Pitched first complete game in 2 years allowing 8H 2BB 1K, the win evened his record at 8-8 on the season.

July 22
Continued mastery over the Cubs. His 7 innings of 5 hit ball and 2 ER were good enough to get his 9th win of the season. Placing him over .500 for the year.

August 6
Wins 5th decision in a row. 6 IP 0R 1 BB 5 K in Milwaukee. Since his last defeat Greg started 7 games notching 5 Wins 2.62 ERA walking 4 and striking out 24.

September 16
Despite leaving the game after 7 strong innings of 4 hit ball allowing only 1 run, striking out 3 and walking none; Greg Maddux was unable to pick up his fifth-teenth win of the season. Maddux was replaced by Ray King in the 8th. King walked 1 and got two outs. Will Cunnane came after Jaret Wright had failed to record an out allowing the runner on base to score. Cunnane was tagged for 2 runs in the 9th inning and replaced with Kent Mercker. Roberto Hernandez came in the 10th and prevented the Braves from getting another chance to hit in the tenth. The game marked the first time Javy Lopez had caught Greg in a regular season game since September 8, 1998.

September 21
Picks up 15th win of the season against the Marlins. 5 IP 1 H 0 R 0 ER 0 BB

September 28
Braves defeat Phillies for final win of the regular season. Maddux and the Braves close down the Vet with a win. Maddux goes 5 IP 4 H 2 R 2 ERs 2 K

October 29
Files for Free Agency

December 7
The Braves do not offer Maddux arbitration, meaning that any team will be able to sign him.
